Zantedeschia aethiopica 'Green Goddess' - potted

Plant type: Bulb

This popular form of Arum Lily bears large matt green leaves and unusual white spathes up to 8" (20cm) long with green veins and edges in spring and summer.

In South Africa Zantedeschia grow in moist soil and swampy areas, in full sun and they perform well if you emulate those conditions over here, although a good mulch is required to protect from winter frost. You can also grow them in large containers provided they are well watered. The effect of a flower is comprised of a large adapted leaf like a sail rolled-into an upward facing trumpet (known as the spathe) and a pencil-like protrusion that rises from the centre holding many small flowers (the spadice). Zantesdeschia used to be included within the Northern Hemishphere genus Calla but were split away some years ago, however, the name has stuck, and you will still see many references to them as 'Calla Lilies'. This is a large species and the form that is most-often recognised for its large pure-white spathes up to 10" long with a creamy yellow spadice in the centre. A good plant for a pond-sides or moist places.

Zantedeschia are of South African origin.
